Introduction to Photoshop

In high school I was really into photography. I spent lots of time in the darkrooms developing black and white photo prints and even once accidentally drank half a beaker of foul tasting stop bath, but that’s a story for another post. Despite the hundreds of hours I spent exposing photo paper and trying to get my prints just right, I never made the switch to digital photography and editing software.

This is my first attempt, recently anyway, at doing something with a digital photo other than filing it away on my hard drive. I found this tutorial on the Digital Photography School website. It’s a series of Photoshop actions that make the photo look like one from a Russian-made Lomo camera. I won’t try to go into detail about the history of that camera because the DPS website does a fine job of that. What I like about the style is that it creates some extra contrast and a vintage sheen in a photo that might otherwise be less remarkable.

For my attempt at this Photoshop adjustment, I used a photo that I took with my iPhone of a motorcycle that was parked near my office in Venice, CA. I think the motorcycle is a Honda CB350, but I won’t claim to be a motorcycle expert.

After several attempts at making the photo look like a Lomo image, I got the following result. Part of this adjustment was fixing the strange light spot on the seat of the motorcycle, which I think is some kind of reflection from a mirror. That fix could have been slicker. On closer inspection the result looks like I colored my problem away in Microsoft Paint. But the end result, after tweaking the colors and contrast is satisfying enough for my introduction to Photoshop.
